BIOGRAFIE
[NL] De Moldavische Patricia Kopatchinskaja is nog maar 33, en toch behoort ze al tot de wereldtop van de violisten. Haar stoutmoedige en hoogst expressieve interpretaties maakten haar geliefd, en ook de manier waarop ze de uiterste grenzen de muziek aftast en soms ook overschrijdt.
Patricia is afkomstig uit Moldavië en volgde haar muzikale opleiding in Wenen en Bern. In seizoen 2002-2003 werd ze uitgeroepen tot ‘Rising Star’, een keurmerk voor buitengewoon talent, en maakte ze tevens haar debuut in de Kleine Zaal van Het Concertgebouw. Inmiddels heeft zij met vele toonaangevende orkesten samengewerkt, waaronder het Wiener Philharmoniker, en is ze een graag geziene gastvioliste op festivals als het Montreux Jazz Festival en de Salzburger Festspiele.
[EN] The exciting young Moldovan violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaya, who won in 2010 a BBC Music Magazine Award for her recording of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, is here joined by a small group of musicians including her mother, also a violinist, and father, a renowned cimbalom player, in a selection of pieces that reflect Eastern European folk and Gypsy traditions. Amongst the composers represented are Bartok, Ligeti, and Kurtág.
One of the few pieces to feature the cimbalom as a main instrument in the standard classical repertoire is György Kurtág’s 8 Duos for Violin and Cimbalom. Kurtág comes from a part of Hungary close to Romania, and his music in these short pieces is steeped in the folk tradition both countries. The Romanian composer George Enescu’s music is celebrated for its Gypsy rhythms and these elements come to the fore in his Third Violin Sonata.
Patricia Kopatchinskaya was born in Moldova and raised in a family of musicians. "Rapsodia" was the name of the former band of her father Victor Kopatchinsky, one of the most famous cimbalom players of his generation. Her parents were constantly travelling with their ensemble, playing 300 concerts every year - in the Kremlin for the government and the generals, in factories and prisons, and in Siberia, North Africa, and Latin America.
With her father on the cimbalom, her mother playing a second violin and friends from the Flemish Symphony Orchestra she here performs works rooted in traditional Moldovan and Eastern European music that have a Gypsy inspiration.

Guido van Oorschot | De Volkskrant, 27-01-2011: Patricia Kopatchinskaja is de Moldavische violiste die bij voorkeur op blote voeten het podium betreedt. Eén karaktertrek valt moeilijk over het hoofd te zien: haar wil tot verzengen is immens. Die hartstocht kan ze kwijt op een cd die je kunt beschouwen als een eerbetoon aan de muziek van haar geboortestreek. En aan haar ouders wellicht, een cimbalomspeler en een violiste, die allebei present zijn in de opnamestudio.
Kopatchinskaja heeft haar gedrevenheid zo te horen van haar vader. Leuk verhaal: toen die boerenzoon op een akker van een maïskolf zat te snoepen, waaide er een krant voorbij. De jongen las een oproep van de muziekschool in Chisinau, die op zoek was naar nieuw talent. Hij stond op en spoedde zich naar zijn nieuwe leven. In het cd-boekje biecht Kopatchinskaja op dat György Kurtág liever vlottere tempo’s had gehoord in zijn Acht duo’s voor viool en cimbalom. Wij denken: niets meer aan veranderen. Tot de categorie ‘verschroeiend’ behoort verder de manier waarop Kopatchinskaja met pianiste Mihaela Ursuleasa de Derde vioolsonate van George Enescu aanpakt. Het duo zet een standaard voor alle musici die de ondertitel van het stuk serieus willen nemen (‘dans le caractère populaire roumain’).
Voor precieuze liefhebbers is haar omgang met de Tzigane van Ravel wellicht een tikkeltje te wild. Anderzijds zal men moeten toegeven dat het verruilen van de piano voor de cimbalom nieuwe, kleurrijke horizonten opent in dit ronduit fabuleuze stuk.
En verder is het met Patricia Kopatchinskaja gewoon lekker roffelen, glijden, stampen, kwetteren en swingen in de ciocârlia, de hora, de calusari en hoe het daar in de Moldavisch-Roemeense grensstreek ook allemaal mag heten. Luister.
